Forget shopping stress and relax
- The Cincinnati Enquirer online, December 19, 2004
By John Eckberg
Article Excerpt: Lama Surya Das, author of "Letting Go of the Person You Used to Be" (Broadway Books), thinks shoppers need to simply slow down.
"People are caffeinated and over-stimulated with noise and the speed of electronics instead of the speed of things that grow," he said.
When waiting in line, Lama Surya Das, who was called "The Western Lama" by the Dalai Lama, recommends prayer.
"Look out the window for a moment. Connect with nature," he said. "Find a moment of mindfulness."
A Lama's Dark Night Of The Soul
- Phenomena magazine online, October 29, 2004
by Randall Fitzgerald
Article Excerpt: Surya Das ... had slipped a disk and the pain almost immediately incapacitated him ... at [a] cloistered retreat set deep in the forests of the Dordogue Valley in southern France. Sprawled alone on his back, unable to move about freely for a month, turned out to be an unexpected blessing. He was forced to surrender to the experience of feeling, really for the first time in his life, the burdens of all his ego attachments, and the repressed shadow parts of his unconscious that began surging unimpeded into his awareness. "It made me stronger inside as it showed me how I hadn't really been in touch with my repressed parts of self. I had avoided all the shadowy sides of the psyche, the irrational, the negative, the intense emotionalism. And all these things were dredged up and I couldn't suppress it by meditation. The biggest river in America is Denial, and it flows through all of us. Laying there helpless for a month cracked open my heart like open heart surgery."

A Personal Journey to the Ever-Present
- integralnaked.org
Excerpt: In this lively conversation with Ken Wilber, Lama Surya Das recounts his
own personal story on the spiritual path, from seeking to realizing, with
all the trials and tribulations inherent in that journey without goal.
In Part II of the conversation, Surya Das focuses on some of the more
theoretical issues of spirituality in our times. But this conversation
is his own story, in his own words, a story that seems more like an
interior adventure novel or incredible motion picture (not surprising,
in that his story has already been featured on an episode of the hit
TV series, Dharma and Greg; listen in and find out how that one
happened...). Surya's story is riveting; we think you will truly
be moved and inspired by it.
Lama Surya Das' interview is available in streaming audio format on
the cutting-edge website www.integralnaked.org. Access to both these
talks is available by subscription, which costs $10 and includes
access to all the material on Integral Naked. Please note that your
credit card will be charged $10 each month subsequently unless and
